Luminous Leader™️ | How to have a great development conversation
This is a short video to explain how to have a great development chat with your direct report prior to them kicking off The Luminous Leader™ program.
The role of this session: is to set clear expectations on what you want them to work on with regards to their leadership development in the program. You want to draw their perspective in as well so you can get on the same page and clarify expectations.
This will also be an opportunity for them to let you know how you can best support them in the program.
Let’s break this down into 3 steps.
- Preparing for a successful conversation
- You direct report should have scheduled 30 mins in your diary titled ‘Manager expectation setting session for The Luminous Leader Program’
- Complete the pre-work survey in the email the Clarety team (Ashley) sent you, download your results from the survey when you complete it. Bring it to the session
- NB:You may also have some information from their last development review of the areas they are working on which can help inform this
- During the session, here is the session structure for you to guide your direct report through
- First 10 mins – Ask them first what they consider to be their strengths and key achievements in the last 12 months, then share your perspective – add or build.
- Make sure you create space for this and keep them on track with the positive, don’t let them jump straight into what they want to work on.
- Next 15 mins – Ask them to share what they would like to work on in the program with regards to your leadership development and ask them to share what would be the evidence of their behaviour change in key areas.
- Probe them if this is not clear by asking: Tell me more about X? What would be different when this is happening?
- Then share your perspective on what you would like to see them work on – adds or builds.
- Last 5 mins: They will ask you how you can help them in this process, we also suggest a regular monthly check in on their development specifically – what they are working on, how you can help.
- After the session – they will share the headlines from the conversation on what they need to work on and evidence of success. Ensure they diarise their first development conversation with you 4 weeks from the date of this session.
We will also be sharing with you a coaching guide to help support you in these future conversations. At any point feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions, concerns, I’m here to support you as well.
