My last month has been brimming with goodness!
I’ve been filling my cup up and seeking some fresh inspiration for a talk I needed to write. It’s made me realise how crucial it is to keep exposing your self to new and interesting people and experiences.
So I’d like to give back and share some of the highlights over my next couple of posts. In the hope that, if we pay it forward, we’ll spark some new thoughts in your minds and who knows, you might pay that forward to the people around you as well…Would you be up for that?
Simple but effective
First up, it’s possibly the most simple and effective thing that stood out to people from the talk. I think because we say it so much we take it for granted that people know this…
If we want to be the best version of ourselves AND be there for others, we have to put our own oxygen mask on first. For years I’ve worked in a service-based industry so it’s been second nature to give, give, give and give some more. In the past this has left me exhausted and resentful. My work / life balance sucked and I didn’t really have the energy or clarity of mind to do the things I was really passionate about.
Put your own oxygen mask first
Cut to today and I am rapidly approaching magic number of people I wanted to positively impact, the person I wanted to be and, the deeply connected relationships I wanted to build. I can tell you, the only way I have been able to do this is by remembering to put my oxygen mask on first.
So, if you feel like you are giving too much to others in work and perhaps in life, at the expense of your health and / or your relationships, then it’s time to sit back, reflect and reverse the way you are doing things.
Here are a couple of questions to get you started:
1. What do I need to give myself right now to put my oxygen mask on first?
2. What could I do right now that will fill my cup back up?
3. Can I give myself permission to do this right now?
Take a walk in nature, a couple of deep breaths, book a holiday!
Whatever you choose as Nike says ‘Just do it!’
